I can assure you they really really mean it. Laugh
Bring it on.

This is an amazing road. There's always very little traffic on it but this time the only form of life I met (which wasn't looking for grass to graze or carrion to feed) was a woman at the very top coming back from a very successful search for sete (edible mushrooms).
35 km of mostly table smooth tarmac with bend after bend after bend and nothing but a deserted (abandoned?) village. Ride it if you dare. Thumbs Up

https://photos.smugmug.com/FRESP-2017/i-XsjFtqL/0/2bd6cf26/M/IMG_0149-M.jpg

Have I ever said how much I love Spanish opening hours? Laugh
Luckily the ice cream kiosk in the center of the town was open.

Because there's not a soul in sight and it's 2PM already. No Finger

More to come.

Keep em coming even though they make me pine for summer and a summer like you get over there rather than the one we get in the UK Laugh

Not having spent much time in Italy other than an overnight near a lake and short stop in Genoa, I had in my mind Italy must be a bit like Spain when it comes to long lunches and everywhere closed 12 to 3pm but guess thats wrong. I know what you mean about Spain and in many ways ever year I visit (probably last 19 out of 20 years), I find the shops all closing for seista time a bit annoying at times but in the back of my mind I kind of respect them for sticking to their traditions of long lunches. That said, its one thing I'd never get used to if I moved there & had to work something like 9am to 8pm with 2-3 hours lunch as I'd only want 20mins lunch and prefer to be left work by 5 Grin

Keep em coming smile

La Seu d'Urgell still mostly belongs to the Bishop-Prince, but at least he keeps his domaine in good shape. Very nice, well kept and clean little town. Thumbs Up

What always amazes me is how well kept everything is. Here the paving stones would be loose or missing, the buildings in various states of disrepair, and they'd be building a supermarket just in front of the oratory.

Have to agree, here in the UK as you'll know 99% of pavements& roads are tarmac and even if they do get a very occasional resurface, its only normally a matter of months before some utility company digs a trench, then does a half arsed job filling it back in and re-tarmac just the bit they did.

In Spain, most pavements are flag stones or more often smaller bricks (or contrete bricks with texture) so when they do work on pipes or cables underneath, they lift them up, do the work then replace them and it looks like they've never been there.

An example of the contrete bricks taken last summer. This is Bilbao with the appartments in the background being were my Mrs & her sister used to own one (now sold) and we stayed for many years instead of hotels. Me and mini me outside the entrance to the new underground station they've finally opened. The year before all that was a huge hole in the ground, now the pavement is restored to the way it was.
index.php?t=getfile&id=22267&private=0
PS Sir Norman Foster is responsible for the undergrounds aesthetics

I have come to the conclusion road surface status can be predicted by the number of kebab shops in the area: the more kebab shops, the worse the road conditions. Wink

I had to modify my tank bag because of the strap in front: I just cut off the thing with a very sharp knife because it was a hindrance than anything else. Once that was done it was just fine. I also have a smaller one when less carrying capacity is needed. It fits the same fuel cap ring.

If you ever happen to be in Aragon, stop in Ayerbe. Lovely little town and I seriously stock up on foodstuff there.

Yet another rule: if the restaurant looks like it has travelled through time from the 50's, it's usually good.

In Aragon nobody geave a fig about Catalans and their referendum, but local people were pretty p***ed about yet another embalse (artificial lake) being proposed on the Rio Gallego.

You certainly get around, despite going to Spain probably 19 years out of the last 20, I've never ridden a motorbike there Sad

What season did you go as it mostly looks very pleasant but not overly hot like 30C+?

Late September/early October. I wouldn't have minded if the weather had been a bit cooler but at least the heat wave they had down there last year had abated.
Of course to get there I had to spend two and a half hours stuck like this on a French highway:

https://photos.smugmug.com/FRESP-2017/i-JN5x4cW/0/732c0e98/M/IMG_0144-M.jpg

Two idiot van drivers had caused a catastrophic accident near Narbonne, of course with spillage from a lorry loaded with solvents. Considering the carnage it didn't take much to get the highway reopened but my day was more or less done for.

This is Sos del Rey Catolico, which outside tourist season is more or less a desert. The only things open were the school and the council house:

I am always pleasantly surprised at how clean and well kept these Spanish villages are. Here everything is dirty and in various states of disrepair, and technically speaking we should be the rich ones...

I cannot but keep wondering why I waste my time riding on our overcrowded, poorly kept and SUV infested roads.

I wonder if anybody still lives there. Spain is a whole lot like Southern Italy: emigration from rural areas is still going very strong.

Positively and absolutely no pictures allowed: they had security people in every room to remind you of that. eek
I just wanted to take a picture of the (female) guides... Toulouse-Lautrec himself would have approved. Thumbs Up
It's well worth the admission price albeit it will take you far longer than you can imagine. And what's exhibited is just a rather small part of the collection.

It's not very far from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the area is not merely completely abandoned but deserted as well.

This is the high town at Vaison-la-Romaine. Apparently Keira Knightley lives here most of the year when she isn't filming and that's surprising because houses there are unusually cheap. Maybe she doesn't make a good neighbor? think
I have a ton of pictures of the place because my mother wouldn't mind moving there so she sent me on a detour to check houses for her. As said despite being a supposedly prestigious location (too many tourist and celebrity seekers for me No Finger ) houses are pretty cheap.
