When the speedo packed up I thought at first the problem was with the speedo joint collar which locates over the drive sprocket nut, but this appears to be okay....so I'm guessing the problem must be with the cable itself. Do I need to remove the screw adjacent to the cable at the sprocket end before I can withdraw the cable? I have tried to unscrew it with some considerable force but it refuses to budge! Any thoughts or advice on cable replacement would be welcome, Many thanks, cbrider.

Yes this Philips Screw can be really stubborn, be careful not to round the screw head off. Would try , with an Impact Driver but dont hit too hard, try to screw it in first with some light taps (may be able to break the hold that way) then try undoing, may take some time but just keep at it, BUT DONT HIT TOO HARD
