I confess I was intrigued by the name of the place so I took a detour to check it out. The road is junk, but it's also just a 6km detour and the place is very peaceful.
No clue of who Sancho Leza was though. Laugh

Some? thats one, I feel cheated Sad

Thats a good height you've got + 40m on the UK's highest mountain and still rideable Thumbs Up

One thing I've noticed in Spain, a lot of it is quite high up and can be deceptive. I recall going from the place my mrs fathers house is in Castile and León which we tend to do once a year (its not in great condition now, needs major work/to be sold) then onwards afterwards to Burgos city itself as we'd never been. Climbed a bit of winding road up the side of the valley and at the top was amazed to see we where 1000m+ meters up eek

I then expected it'd go down again quite quickly like a proper mountain range but it was not to be as it was another 40 or so miles fairly flat all the way to Burgos and assume that 1000m+ plain must be a plateaux....we don't get them in the UK Laugh

Found it. It was the CL629 we took

https://goo.gl/maps/SGbp52GtaNdu3PH16

The next 40 miles are so are all more or less 1000m up and fairly flat

and while I'm at it, anyone wanna buy a house in Burgos? Needs work starting with the vines/trees between the front gate to front door Grin

https://goo.gl/maps/PSNpKR6nJDRNqBHR9 <-- its the one straight ahead down the side road, never seen it in winter myself

He's just doing it because real estate prices in Spain are out of control. Wink

A view from the Pueyo Monastery.
Not a sentient lifeform to be seen, not even a Magpie or a Kite, except for a single cat.

And this is how the monks make some money on the side. I knew those Catholics were up to no good. Wink

Not really, spring and decent weather will tend to start a month earlier than UK and autumn and colder weather a month or so later but this is 'Up North' in Spain so it does tend to get cold although usually not quite as cold as UK. Check the Google maps link for the same location/house in Feb 2010.

Luckily I've only ever been in August so only known it warm/hot and sunny Sunny

@Kakugo, I take it they also let you have a tour of the monastery for fee?

No idea about fees, but guided tours need to be arranged in advance to avoid disturbing the monks during their daily activities. And hiding away all the eavesdropping and recording machinery beforehand, of course. Wink
Joking aside this is a cloistered monastery so visitors are welcome as long as they keep to the designated areas and don't make too much noise.

This is another cloistered monastery in Lerma, Castilla Vieja. The arrow indicated where you can buy handicrafts from the nuns: as St Benedict, the father of Western monastic life, said "Ora et labora", "Pray and work".

1710m, even better height Thumbs Up

Haven't been to that area, usually head SW from Bilbao towards Burgos but only half way although as mentioned already, did go onwards to Burgos a few years ago. This year from Bilbao we went the other way, SE to Zaragoza for a day then onwards to Barcelona

Here's one of my son. Anyone guess why we visited this place along the way between Zaragoza and Barcelona?

Trust me Slaz, we've thought about it and still do but the mrs prefers Cantabria or possibly a little more south towards Barcelona for better weather without getting ridiculous and going full monty and going further South much of which is spoilt by tourists and ex-pats like she wants me to be Laugh

PS its not worth much, abandoned/semi-abandoned properties in Spain are 10 a penny as the move to cities for work is mostly more recent than the UK for example and many families still have their inherited 'village' properties from their parents/grandparents so some get done up and used for long summer retreats. If that was in the UK 40 miles from a major city (Bilbo/Burgos), it'd be worth 5 to 10 times what we have it on the market for despite 3 floors and something like 200m2 floors. Its priced 8 times lower than her fathers Bilbao apartment (65m2) sold for Cry

That's where Marquez was born.
Albeit I think these days he lives in Andorra, obviously not because of the local tax-friendly legislation. Wink

Spot on Kak. My son spotted it was just a few km's off the motorway on the way to Barcelona so we took the detour and had a coffee at the only place that seemed to celebrate its most famous son.

I have been asked by my uncle to keep an eye on a bastide (possibly not far from good hunting grounds) so I always have a good laugh at impossibly high real estate prices in Spain.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Spagna-2019/i-PVmCBXN/0/198f38ee/XL/IMG_1112-XL.jpg

€99,000 for a flat in a shrinking small town (less than a thousand souls) in the middle of nowhere. I suspect the place had its last paintjob when the Generalissimo was still alive and in living colour. Wink
What, do you want something more rustic? No problem!

https://photos.smugmug.com/Spagna-2019/i-BzhhBGf/0/cd1d6098/XL/IMG_1439-XL.jpg

Don't pay attention to the fact the roof may cave in at any moment nor to the fact it was probably last lived during the Carlist Wars. This is a bargain!
What, even more rustic?
Then I have just the thing for you!

Just think of the endless possibilities, such as being robbed blind by local building contractors. Wink

There's supposed to be a painting by Michelangelo in there but the damn thing would need a good cleaning because is simply too dark to waste a picture on. I wonder how much it would cost to restore it. eek
If I got this right this painting looks so different from other works by Michelangelo there are serious doubts about its authenticity but since it has never been properly studied, let alone subjected to a proper chemical-physical analysis, nobody has clue who really painted and how much it's really worth.

My dinner in Lerma (all seafood-based):

https://photos.smugmug.com/Spagna-2019/i-qFH3DZm/0/71be7bad/L/IMG_1247-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Spagna-2019/i-969Mk6g/0/e6ef47ad/L/IMG_1248-L.jpg

As delicious as the shrimps are do not (I repeat: do not) eat them if you are sharing a room with somebody, need to kiss a baby afterwards etc because they are deep-fried with big chunks of tasty garlic.

Self-explanatory. Wink

I don't know why people make so much fuss about garlic breath etc, it might not be as nice as a rose or bacon frying but better than BO & farts* for example Wink

*other peoples, mine smell great :=D

Well, it's probably better than the smell of piss that seems to hang on the center of every European city that hasn't got draconian law enforcement, an excellent urban hygiene service or a combination of both. Thumb Down

And speaking of ill-smelling cities...

This used to be the House of the Spanish Inquisition in Logroño. I did not expect it to have been painted pink. Wink
