My cooling fan stopped coming on when the engine gets hot. The fan works when earthed so the issue lies elsewhere. I've replaced the radiator switch and the thermostat. All that's left is the grounding wire for the fan (I think) and the relay. I have located the grounding wire but I have no idea where the relay is. Can anyone help?

I've had a look in my Haynes but either I'm blind or its not in there.

Check the fan switch connector first: you wouldn't be the first and wouldn't be the last to have troubles with those large spade connectors Honda used around that time frame. They made a fortune selling switches while the problem laid in the connector. Usually it's crud buildup inside the connector but I wouldn't rule out a broken wire at the connector or even oxydation. Those connectors were originally gold-plated but Honda later switched to a cheap alloy without changing the design. Caused a ton of issues.

The fact the fan works when grounded clearly says it's either that connector or an electric problem very near it, before the main wiring loom. It could be the switch ground or the wire going from switch to fan (black, going by memory so double check).

Hey! Thanks for the advice. Are you talking about the wire that plugs into the radiator switch?

I should have an old Honda radiator fan somehwere at home. If I find it I'll post a picture, but there's a wire going from the fan to the radiator switch. It's usually wrapped in insulating tape. That's what you should check.

I'll do that and report my findings 👍🏻

I've finally had time to have a look and the wire connecting to the radiator switch seems intact and the connector itself has little to no corrosion and there is no dirt or grime.

So with that off the list and the fuse also intact, it must be the relay or grounding wire. Can you tell me where the relay is? My local Honda dealership couldn't help me.

If your bike still has a fan motor switch, it hasn't got a fan motor relay: it was only introduced on the CBF600 with the 2008 model, which adopted an ECU-controlled fan motor.

So that leaves ground. Confused

I've forgotten to ask: did you buy your present radiator switch new from a dealer or used from a breaker's yard? I doubt the latter test every part they sell and the odd defective part is not unheard of.

After messaging a Honda dealer I know of he told me in 2007 they sold both the new fuel injected 2008 model which arrived in November or so and the old carb model. So what model do you have?
As said the carb bikes have good old arrangement with a fan and a switch but the FI ones are a completely different thing.

I own the carb version. So that rules out the relay. I'll have to look at the grounding wire

Clean the ground throughly with a brass brush. You have no idea how many headaches ground lines have given me over the years... and fixing them takes minutes. Doh

Another thing. Check coolant level: if it doesn't reach the switch and/or you have an air pocket in the radiator the fans won't kick in even if your engine is melting over. That's a big part of the reason Honda switched over to an ECU-controlled design.

You've been a great help. I've not had a chance to see to it as my bike was stolen. found it dumped and it needs work. I'll definitely take your advice with cleaning the grounding wire though. I appreciate your time 🙏🏻
