No idea with BMW's as aren't they a bit odd with their recommended oils although I suspect someone else will be along soon who'll know verbatim what the best oil is Wink

For me, I always tend to opt for a big brand (Shell, Castrol, Motul), 10-40W and if I'm feeling flush, the fully synth although have been known to go for semi

Right now my 929 has Shell Advanced Ultra 10-40W in it but you've reminded me I should change it as although it likely done less than 1500 miles in 2 years, it is 2 year old oil now Sad

I use Castrol 10w 40 4T last time,seems to do the job,i was just curious really ;-)

Semi-synthetic or fully-synthetic ???

I'm glad someone has asked that question because I never know which I should be using. I always imagine that full will be better, but I have heard that until the engine has done around 6-8k you should stick with semi. Is that correct?, and if so why?

And what is "ester" synthetic??

Run of the mill 10W-40 or 15W-50, those old engines aren't really designed for recent light oil like 5W-40 or similar. Not that they'll break down but you may seem some oil consumption even in a healthy engine. And nobody wants to read a "My engine has started using oil!" post. Wink

As a chemist I am saying this: the whole "synthetic" and "mineral" thing is ancient history. In fact I don't even know if traditional mineral or synthetic oil are even available anymore in Europe outside of special orders with Castrol and Motul. think

Watercooled BMW boxers run on synthetic oil from the factory, and I think most Ducati's and Yamaha's do as well. This stuff is mind-boggingly stable.

The only exceptions are ester-based oils, like the Motul 300V: esters break down under high temperatures and pressures far faster than PAO (Poly Alpha Olephines, the basic components of synthetic lubes) so the oil needs to be replaced at shorter intervals. But given the advantages ester-based oils give on very high power engines it's a worthwhile trade. Thumbs Up

As per brands I like Repsol, Motul and Mobil. Castrol and Shell are great but are getting hard to find here.
